How your due date is actually calculated (and why it's an estimate, not a deadline)

A due date feels like it should be precise, a single day circled on a calendar, but the way it’s actually calculated makes clear it was never meant to be one. It’s a statistical estimate built from averages, useful for planning and for tracking a pregnancy’s progress, but not a deadline your baby is working toward.

Naegele’s rule: the standard calculation

The most common method, called Naegele’s rule, estimates a due date as 280 days, or 40 weeks, from the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP). It’s the method used by most healthcare providers and the one behind this site’s Due Date Calculator. The math is simple, but the assumption behind it is worth understanding: it treats every cycle as a textbook 28-day cycle with ovulation occurring around day 14.

Why counting from your period, not conception, is the convention

It might seem odd to date a pregnancy from a day before conception even happened, but it’s a practical convention: the first day of your last period is a specific, rememberable date, while the exact day of conception generally isn’t known. Counting from LMP gives everyone, patients and providers alike, a consistent, standardized starting point, even though the pregnancy itself, counted from conception, is really about two weeks shorter than the 40-week figure implies.

Why cycle-length variation shifts the real picture

A 28-day cycle with day-14 ovulation is an average, not a universal fact. Cycles that run longer or shorter shift the actual day of ovulation, and therefore conception, relative to what Naegele’s rule assumes. Someone with a consistently 35-day cycle likely ovulates later than day 14, which means a due date calculated purely from LMP may run a bit early. This is one of the main reasons LMP-based dating is treated as a starting estimate rather than a final answer.

Why an early ultrasound is often used to refine it

For this reason, an ultrasound in the first trimester, when fetal measurements are most consistent and predictable across pregnancies, is commonly used to confirm or adjust the LMP-based estimate, especially when cycles are irregular or the LMP date isn’t known with confidence. Many providers will use whichever estimate is considered more reliable for a given pregnancy, and it’s common for an ultrasound-based date to become the working due date if it differs meaningfully from the LMP calculation.

Most babies aren’t born on their due date

Even a well-calculated due date is a midpoint of a range, not a prediction of a specific day. It’s widely reported in general pregnancy references that only a small minority of babies, often cited as around 5%, are actually born on their exact estimated due date. That’s not a sign anything went wrong with the calculation; it reflects that birth timing naturally varies from pregnancy to pregnancy.

“Full term” is a range, not a day

For that same reason, full-term pregnancy is generally described as a range, commonly cited as about 37 to 42 weeks, rather than a single date. A birth anywhere in that window is considered within the typical range. Thinking of the due date as the center of a several-week window, instead of a hard deadline, is a more accurate way to hold it in mind as the date approaches.

What this means for the calculator

This calculator, like every tool on this site, applies a standard dating convention to produce a general estimate. It doesn’t know your specific cycle history, hasn’t seen an ultrasound, and isn’t a substitute for the dating your own healthcare provider establishes for your pregnancy.
